GTX 1080 Ti HEVC Support?

Post by rack04 »

I recently switched from a GTX 970 to a GTX 1080 Ti and still receive the "GPU decoder: Video type not supported on this device [o]. Exiting..." message. I assumed being a more modern GPU I would get this support, but maybe I was wrong. I read the readme about the limitations:
8. Limitations for HEVC support:

* HEVC requires an nVidia device that supports HEVC, such as the
GTX 750/950/1050 and beyond. If your device does not support HEVC and you attempt
to open an HEVC stream, a popup error message will appear. If you want to
decode HEVC on a card that supports only hybrid decoding, such as the
750/970 etc., you must enable D3D mode and DXVA mode in your INI file.
Cards that support full HW HEVC decode do not require these settings.
GTX 1050 and better is highly recommended.

* Frame/field repeats for HEVC are not yet implemented. If you have an HEVC
stream with repeat flags, please contact me."
Assuming the GTX 1080 Ti doesn't have full support I went to the .ini and couldn't find the DXVA mode to enable. Any ideas?

1080 Ti should be fine. Is this happening in DGIndexNV or DGDecodeNV or both? What is your DGDecNV version and are you sure you are not picking up an older version in your plugins file? What is your nVidia driver version? Finally, can you show a mediainfo dump on the source file? Not all HEVC stream types are supported, e.g., 4:2:2. If you can link a small sample I can test it on my 1080 Ti machine.

DXVA mode no longer exists.

It's happening with DGIndexNV. I haven't tried with DGDecodeNV. I'm using DGIndexNV 255 (64 bit). Yes, I'm sure I'm not picking up an older version in the plugins file. I'm using driver version 552.12. Just for testing I'm using the HEVC YUV444 10 bit Borderlands trailer from this link.

https://thedigitaltheater.com/borderlands-2024/

I extracted the video stream using gMKVExtractGUI and tried to open the resultant .hevc in DGIndexNV.

Ah, 10-bit 4:4:4. I do support that in DGDecNV and theoretically the 1080 Ti supports it. I'll drag out my 1080 Ti machine from the closet and test it with your stream, which BTW, works fine with our RTX 2080Ti/3090/4090. Are you able to decode the 8-bit 4:2:0 version of the trailer?

I downloaded the AVC YUV420 8 bit version of the same trailer and encoded it myself to .hevc using x265 and the resultant file opened flawlessly in DGDecNV. Here is the output of my encode that works.

Yeah, the 1080 Ti does not support HEVC 4:4:4. It works fine with HEVC 4:2:0 8-bit and 10-bit (and you've now confirmed that). I can't find reliable information when googling about it. As 1080Ti is reaching end of driver support anyway, if you need HEVC 4:4:4 you'll need to look at a more recent card. 4:4:4 stuff is not that common and currently the DGDecNV filtering goodies do not support 4:4:4.

Good to hear from you, rack04, it's been a while. I hope all is going swimmingly for you.

I thought he died. Thank the Lord!

Guys, I have two radios on the way. And I bought an Eico 368 sweep generator to align them:

The Delco AM/FM on our display rack also needs aligning. If you want I can chronicle my experiences. Just lemme know.

nVidia doesn't actually say when EOL comes. It tells you if the device is still in support. Then by reviewing the statuses for all the devices you can see that the average EOL is 9-11 years. You have a GP107 (Consumer Pascal) and can look it up here:

Thanks for that.
I'll have to start looking for an economical replacement for the 1050Ti, then.
I read a some articles/reviews recently strongly suggesting be really careful what one chooses, apparently some are "tweaked down" substantially more than may be inferred from a model number, eg ?3050?
As always, a trade-off between available $ vs acceptable performance vs "relative value".
I really do like it here.

Yeah, I'm always amazed at how fast bleeding edge turns to butter knife. Nonetheless I do look forward to the 5000 series.
