nVidia deprecation issues

Uh oh, could be trouble ahead. nVidia states this in the latest 8.1 SDK notes:

"4. Support for Video Codec SDK 4.0 and earlier will be deprecated in the drivers
releasing around Q4 2018. As a result, any application compiled with Video
Codec SDK 4.0 or below header(s) will stop working after those drivers.
Hence it is strongly recommended for users to migrate to later versions of
Video Codec SDK."

I'll start looking into updating to the newer SDK. Hopefully we won't have to drop any older cards.

I just compared my headers to the ones in the latest SDK and there do not seem to be any relevant differences.

We will find out when those drivers are released
Worst case is that some older cards are dropped, just like Win XP
There comes a time when one wants the latest features one can't do it on old hardware or OS's

You guys with Fermi, watch out! Driver 397.31 drops support for Fermi cards. This driver is hosed up in many ways so it's best to avoid it for now, but this clearly shows that nVidia's intent is to drop Fermi going forward.

One more big change: 32-bit OS is no longer supported for any GPU in 397.31 going forward!

32-bit flow on 64-bit OS seems OK, however. Will the 32-bit XP diehards finally die?

I will stick with Fermi-compatible CUDA toolset 6.5 as long as I can so that Fermi owners can at least continue with 391.35. If you have a 32-bit OS, you must stick with 391.35 or below.

Our builds are now running with CUDA 11. There is no turning back.

Phew ! Just made it as a non-drop card. I have a much loved and well-used GeForce GTX 750 Ti ... which I gather is the first of the Maxwells

Moving to CUDA 11 pretty much also kills Win7 support, even with Maxwell+ GPUs. The reason is that there is no compatible Win7 nVidia driver that supports CUDA 11.

Too bad, so sad. I'm thrilled, thrilled I tell ya, that we are putting at least one coffin nail in Win7. The gnashing of teeth of the cavemen and Luddites will be sublime. Seriously though, Win7 is now almost a year past end of life, and almost 4 years past end of support. There are still WinXP holdouts too. It's baffling to me.

I was sad to move past Windows 7, and the sheer amount of effort that is required to get Windows 10 into some semblance of usability that doesn't make me curse every minute hurts my soul, but now that I've been done with W7 for a year or two, I can't say that I miss it.

Windows 11+ is a whole other thing. I don't know how I'm going to survive that transition when it finally becomes absolutely necessary. I keep telling myself that I need to just get on with it, cut the cord, and go fully Linux... but I haven't yet, because I *like* Windows, when it's set up right and not incessantly trying to shove things in my face, make me buy stuff, or make every task 9X more difficult than it needs to be. And that's the place to which I've wrangled W10 Enterprise IoT. I don't think doing the same with W11 (or 12 or whatever) is likely to be possible due to how all-in MS is going with cloud integration and the app store and ads and "AI" in everything.

Maybe I'll get lucky and society will collapse before I have to deal with it.

We have win11 on one machine and it's not so bad after you do all the tricks to make it look like classic win7/10.
